Don’t worry and look up!

Matthew 6:26 – “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?”

In every city big or small we see people hustling, cars, buses, 3-wheelers, scooters, everyone trying to get somewhere, busy running around trying to make a living.  We are supposed to work and earn a decent living, there is nothing wrong about it.

However, Jesus clearly teaches us a few principles we need to follow in order to live a balanced life. One of the principles is actually a command: “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.”

Then Jesus asks us to reflect: “Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?” (verse 25)

He also asks us to look up, towards the skies, “to look at the birds of the air”.

Have you seen much traffic congestion when you see the birds flying? They seem pretty relaxed and enjoying their flight, coasting through air waves or swooping down trying to get something to eat.  Rarely we see these birds looking exhausted, hungry, stressed out.

That is because our heavenly Father takes care of each of these creatures – He feeds and provides for them daily.

And you and I are so much more valuable to God than any of these birds!

Let’s choose to practice what Jesus said a long time ago, before automobiles were invented, before people were so busy running around worrying about how to make a living, and forgetting to seek Him first – the One Who provides for each and every one of our needs.  After all, no matter how hard we work to afford a costly earthly garment, it is never going to match the beauty of the lilies of the field, which are heavenly clothed.

So, do not worry, “but seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Matthew 6:25-33 (NIV)
