God’s Customary Mercy

Psalm 119:132 – “Look upon me and be merciful to me, as Your custom is toward those who love Your name.”

The dictionary defines the word ‘custom’ as, “a thing that one does habitually”. Different communities in India have different customs, especially when it comes to festivities and celebrations. We also each have our customary duties, things we do on a regular basis because it’s our habit.

It might be one person’s custom to have coffee first thing in the morning, while another might opt to have a hearty breakfast instead. These are things we do naturally, without even thinking about it. Nobody needs to remind us or coax us to do it. In today’s verse we see that God has a custom too… a custom to be merciful to those who love Him. Isn’t that the best?! It’s as though “mercy” is the Lord’s middle name.

We could lose track of the number of Bible verses that elaborate on God’s abundant mercy. He does not treat us as we deserve but showers us with new mercy each morning. The Lord looks on each of His children with kindness and compassion. The next time you’re being hard on yourself, spend a few moments with Jesus. Rest in His amazing love for you.
