James 4:10

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

As born-again believers, we are expected to love and trust in the Lord with all our heart. As part of loving Him, it is our biblical responsibility to walk in His ways and humble ourselves, just like Lord Jesus did by coming down from heaven to earth to serve God’s will unto His death (Philippians 2:8). Also, it is helpful to understand that God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6) and the Lord withstands self-important, arrogant men, but supplies His sufficient grace to those that are meek and lowly of heart (James 4:10).

Throughout this chapter, we see that James mentions a list of commandments that will help us maintain a close fellowship with God. It is important that we study them verse by verse and make it the criteria for our life to lead a successful life.

It is vital that we don’t misunderstand humility. It is certainly not about demeaning ourselves in front of others. In fact, humility cannot even be generated by human effort or emotions. We cannot train ourselves to be humble through some training, or coaching. Humility is a fruit of the Spirit that should be the way of life for every born-again believer. Humility is born in the heart of someone who submits themselves to walk in God and His ways, maturing in the Christian faith.

In simple terms, humbling ourselves is to confess that God is the supreme authority and that we cannot do anything without Him. It is about trusting Him in all things and not relying on our own abilities (Proverbs 3:5).
