Light Unto the World

John 16:28

I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.

Today’s verse is part of Jesus’ farewell address to His disciples as He was preparing them for His departure. Jesus revealed that He had come from the Father and He was going back to Him. Jesus came to reveal God’s love for us and to bridge the distance sin had created. The Son of God stepped out of eternity and entered our world so He could be the propitiation for our sins.

We would have no hope of ever reaching the heart of God if not for the blood Jesus shed for us on the cross. His coming was heaven reaching down to touch the earth, and His return would mark the completion of His earthly mission – His sacrifice for the redemption of the world. And now, because of His victory over sin and death, we have access to the throne of God (Hebrews 4:16).

Jesus came as the light of the world, so whoever follows Him no longer walks in darkness (John 8:12). Jesus fulfilled His mission on earth through His life, death, and resurrection. But as He was leaving, He commissioned His disciples to continue His mission (Matthew 28:19-20). As followers of Christ, we are now called to be a light unto the world (Matthew 5:14). We reflect the love of God through our lives, so others will see our good works and glorify Him (Matthew 5:16).

Today, take a moment to reflect on how you can be a light wherever God has placed you – in your family, neighbourhood, workplace, and city. Surrender your life to the Lord and allow Him to fulfil His purpose in and through your life.
