The Everlasting Covenant

Genesis 17:7

“And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you.”

The covenant God made with Abraham is not just for His descendants but for those of us who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as well (Galatians 3:14). This is meant to be an everlasting covenant – not just for the time we live on this earth, but for eternity!

A covenant is basically an agreement which brings about a relationship of commitment between God and his people. A covenant requires two parties – God and each of us, and both need to be committed to the agreement. As human beings, we’re prone to sin and don’t always keep our end of the bargain. That’s why when Jesus bore our sins on the cross and died in our stead, He established a new covenant between God and us.

Jesus Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, and He has redeemed us from our sins so that we may receive the promised eternal inheritance (Hebrews 9:15). Now, as people who’ve been bought with a price, we cannot take this gift of grace lightly. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we learn to love God and love the people around us. We strive to glorify God in whatever we do. And above all, we live as His ambassadors in this world – shining His light in the darkness and sharing His Word to those who haven’t heard it yet.
