The Sun of Righteousness

Malachi 4:2 – “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.”

The sun rises each morning and sets every night without much ado. But the amount of value it adds to our day is mind blowing. The sun drives away the darkness and makes our day brighter. The rays of the sun kill germs and aid healing. Sunlight nourishes growing plants but the heat also withers plants that don’t have healthy roots.

The mention of the Sun of righteousness in today’s verse refers to Jesus Himself. Much like the sun, Jesus drove away darkness on the cross and brought us into the light. By His stripes we are healed. When we nourish ourselves in the Word of God, we grow to be more like Jesus. On the other hand, we will wither up if we’re not consciously growing in Christ.

Much like the calves in the stall that increase in strength as they grow up, so do we need to feed on the Word of God and grow in His likeness. When the stall door is open, the calves jump out, joyful and free. So are we strengthened in the Lord to go out into the world, free from our chains and filled with the joy of the Lord.
