What does the Lord require of you?

Micah 6:8

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

What does it take to walk with the Lord? Micah lists three simple, but important requirements that the Lord looks for.

  1. Do Justice: How can we understand the true meaning of Justice in today’s terms? In times of racism, casteism, biasness, etc., it means treating everyone fairly and equally. It could mean standing up for what’s right, especially when someone has been wronged. It could mean laying aside your own prejudices and stereotypes and looking at people how the Lord Himself looks at them.
  2. To Love Kindness: The Lord loves to be kind. He loves to show kindness. Ephesians 2:7 says He has expressed His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. In everlasting kindness He has promised to have compassion on us. In the same manner does He expect us to show kindness. In fact, not just show, but to love to be kind. Kindness, like love, requires action. It’s not just a feeling, but an expression.
  3. Walk Humbly: This is not regarding the way you tread or your stride. Just as mentioned in verses before this verse, when you come before the Lord, what offerings can you bring to impress Him? For it is not the external ‘act’ as in ‘act humble’ or ‘be humble’ that He looks for. He is looking for someone who has humility flowing from every part of their lives-their thoughts, their words and their actions.

We see all of this so beautifully exhibited in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the story of the woman caught in adultery, He stooped down to the ground, showing His humble attitude, showered her with forgiveness, showing kindness and in His wisdom brought forth justice for her. May He then fill us, His children with the same Holy Spirit that we will also manifest Christ in our lives-in all humility, deeply loving kindness and just in all we do. In Jesus’s Name!
