Genesis 41:15-16 – “Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.’ ‘I cannot do it,’ Joseph replied to Pharaoh, ‘but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.'”
The story of Joseph has a lot to teach us, but none more important than the fact that Joseph unashamedly relied on the Lord for everything. It didn’t matter where he was, in the pit, Potiphar’s house, prison, or the palace – the Lord was with Joseph, and Joseph trusted God, irrespective of his circumstances.
In today’s verses, we see Joseph being summoned from prison so he could interpret Pharaoh’s dream. Joseph could have taken advantage of this opportunity to blow his own trumpet. He could have taken credit for the special gift he had of interpreting dreams and foretelling the future. But he didn’t! Joseph corrected Pharaoh; he admitted that he couldn’t do it, but God could.
In our daily lives, we may be faced with many opportunities to boast about our abilities and what we are capable of. But the right response would be to humbly admit our inadequacies and acknowledge the hand of God that’s at work in our lives. It is by His grace that we are who we are. Take every opportunity this week, to remove the spotlight from yourself and place it where it belongs – on Jesus. Acknowledge God’s ability and let others know what He can do in their lives alone. To God be all the glory!
