John 8:32-36 – “The Truth Will Set You Free So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, ‘If you abide in my Word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ They answered him, ‘We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, “You will become free”?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
In the scripture, there was so much power in our Lord’s words that many people were convinced and claimed to believe in Him. Jesus encouraged them (as He does us) to attend his teaching, rely on His promises, obey His commands, and withstand all temptations to evil. This would truly make them (and us) His disciples. By being taught of His Word and Spirit, the people would learn where their hope and strength lay. Christ spoke of spiritual liberty. Those who had carnal hearts didn’t understand this, they worried about problems related to their body and their distress from their worldly affairs. But bondage of sin, captivity to Satan, liberty by Christ, wrong done to their precious souls, and the hazard of their eternal welfare sounded like strange things to their ears. Jesus reminded them that any one who practiced any sin, was a slave to that sin, which was the case with most of them. Often we see people disputing about freedom of every kind, while they are slaves to some sinful lust. Jesus Christ in the Gospel offers us freedom. Only He has power to do this and those whom Jesus makes free are ‘truly’ free.
So, never give up. Jesus brings you freedom. With God, you always have hope for healing – for your family member, for your marriage, for your finances, for your career, and for your downs and outs. So trust Jesus, abide in His Word, and taste true freedom!
