Philippians 2:8
“And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.“
Today’s scripture speaks about Jesus Christ. It says :
- He was being found in appearance as a man : Christ’s appearance as a man was not an illusion. He revealed Himself through a complete and genuine human nature united with His divine nature in one Person, who is both human and divine.
- He humbled Himself: Christ was not forced to take up redemption mission. The language here is parallel to the phrase “made Himself nothing” in Phil 2:7. Each act occurs by the free exercise of Christ’s own will.
- became obedient: This phrase also confirms that Jesus is acting out of His own will without any persuasion. Submission to the Father’s will (Heb. 10:5–9) is more significant for the One who is equal with the Father (Phil2:6) than for anyone else. Jesus obeyed Father’s will all through His life, the significant one is death on the cross.
- a cross: The accent is on Christ’s willingness to suffer the most shameful and painful of deaths, rather than on the atoning significance of the event (cf. Rom. 3:21–26).
Philippians 2:8 not just shows humility of Jesus, it shows the love what He bestows upon each one of us. His heart is “None should perish“. May we share His heart and do everything in our power to proclaim His Gospel. May we also learn to humble ourselves and embrace God’s perfect will and plan for our lives, no matter whats the cost.
Blessed Day ahead.
