Trust in God and Do the right

Psalm 37:3-4
“Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.”

Psalm 37 is termed as “Maschil – a teaching Psalm“. It mostly speaks about the advancement of the wicked and the disgrace of the righteous, a solution to the difficulties that arise thereupon, and an exhortation to conduct ourselves as becomes us under such dark dispensations.

To begin with, Psalmist encourages us not to fret or be envious of evildoers and workers of iniquity. We might witness the prosperity of evildoers, those who are far from God and wonder are we trying to be good for nothing. Probably according to us, we are yet to experience the abundant life which Jesus promised us. We tend to become weary and discouraged. We might have thoughts to give up on Christ-centered life and embrace world-centered life.

However we are counseled to live a life on confidence and be secured in God, and that will keep us from fretting at the prosperity of evil-doers; if we do well for our own souls, we shall see little reason to envy those that do so ill for theirs.

Here are two of three excellent precepts, which we are to be ruled by, and, to enforce them, three precious promises, which we may rely upon.

1. We must make God our hope in the way of duty and then we shall have a comfortable subsistence in this world, Ps. 37:3. We must not think to trust in God and then live as we wish; it is not trusting God, but tempting him, if we do not make conscience of our duty to him. Nor must we think to do good, and then to trust to ourselves, and our own righteousness and strength. No; We must do both trust in the lord and never stop doing good.And then, It is promised that we shall be well provided for in this world: God himself is a shepherd, a feeder, to all those that trust in Hm, Ps. 23:1.
2. We must make God our heart’s delight and then we shall have our heart’s desire, Ps. 37:4. We must delight ourselves in Him, be satisfied of His loving-kindness. Doing this too have a promise annexed to it: “He shall give thee the desires of thy heart.” He has not promised to gratify all the appetites of the body and the humours of the fancy, but to grant all the desires of the heart, all the cravings of the renewed sanctified soul. What is the desire of the heart of a good man? It is this, to know, and love, and live to God, to please him and to be pleased in him.

So, let us embrace this teaching and continue to trust Him, do good, and delight in Him.
