Matthew 7:11 NKJV
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
Today’s verse is part of Jesus’ teachings from the Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 7:7-11, Jesus teaches His disciples to pray persistently, with faith that the Father will generously answer them.
Human nature often tends to lean toward evil. Even the most devoted fathers can occasionally reveal their selfish side. While a father may be extravagant with his children, as a human, he has imperfections. In contrast, God’s perfect love is everlasting and unwavering; He never tires of giving good things to His children, even before we ask.
There is a significant distinction between our Heavenly Father and earthly father. Biblical history reveals a faithful God who disciplines Israel, the disobedient lost son, yet bestows the best gifts.
God’s greatest gift to all mankind is His Son, Jesus Christ. Without the sacrifice of Jesus, we would never be able to draw close to God. When we accept Christ as our Lord and Saviour, our lives are transformed and saved. Along with the gift of salvation, every believer also receives the gift of the Holy Spirit – through whom we are granted spiritual gifts. These spiritual gifts (Romans 12:6-8) edify us and enable us to serve God and fulfill His purposes.
Today, let’s change how we pray. Instead of asking for material blessings alone, let’s persistently seek our Good-Good Father for spiritual gifts. Let us pray that we walk as His children, guided by the gift of the Holy Spirit. There is no greater gift than having God in our lives.
