Forgive and Forget

Hebrews 8:12

“I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

Two other versions of the same verse read: “I will forgive their sins, their wickedness” and “will no longer, never again, remember their wrongs.”

Has anyone done you any wrong? If the answer is yes, it means you have not forgotten it. We all remember when someone has hurt us, whether through insults, cheating, theft, or lies. The list can go on and on. Some of us have managed to overcome the pain caused by these wrongs done to us. Some of us have been able to forgive those who wronged us. Yet, we all still remember those incidents.

Once, a pastor in a church made the congregation turn to each other and say in a loud voice, “You are not God! If you were given powers by God in your human nature, then the world population would be very much reduced. You would have destroyed so many in your wrath!”

Our God is merciful, kind, and forgiving; He is love. He is so very gracious to each one of us who confesses our wrongdoings. Through the Blood of Jesus shed on the Cross, He not only forgives our wrongs but also forgets them—He does not remember them.

Even if we have worked through the process of forgiving someone who has hurt us and we may no longer feel the pain, emotional scars are often left behind to remind us of what happened.

Today, think of someone you need to forgive. Let us pray: Father, we need Your grace and mercy as we ask You to help us forgive. We also ask You to help us forget, just as You do for us. We ask this prayer in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen!
