Psalm 23:1
The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
The shepherd determines the flock’s quality of life through his care and guidance. He adds to his flock in two ways: by buying sheep or by raising them. He either buys each sheep or welcomes it when it is born into the flock. At its core, ownership forms the connection between shepherd and sheep. He owns the flock; he has purchased each one or brought it into the world with his own hands.
God gathers each believer into His flock in two wondrous ways. He purchases us at the highest price—the precious blood of Christ—and breathes new life into us through His Spirit. This living relationship with the Lord as our Shepherd means we lack nothing.
We habitually dwell on the things we lack or the goals we haven’t attained, and this mindset steals our peace. Yet this verse invites us to implement a new perspective.
It reveals that God is more than enough. He goes before us and walks beside us. He knows us better than we know ourselves and recognises our needs before we do. We will live without lack because our Shepherd meets our deepest needs. He watches over us with unfailing love. He fills our hearts with peace and contentment. No one can care for us as faithfully as our Shepherd.
What greater assurance than knowing this? What security could ever compare? The Lord, our Shepherd, stays closer to us than anyone else. He understands our every thought and every need and provides for us. He is our constant companion who never leaves our side. Even when others walk away, He remains and faithfully walks with us through every moment of our lives. Because He so lovingly shepherds us, we will lack nothing.
