Breaking Down Barriers

Ephesians 2:14 NKJV

For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation.

Separation began in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve separated from God because of sin. Several years later, we see that the Jews, as God’s chosen people, had specific laws and customs that set them apart. Gentiles appeared to be outsiders, but Jesus changed that perspective through His sacrifice. He created a new humanity, reconciling both groups to God through the cross, putting to death their hostility, and granting us peace with God. The Greek root word for “peace” conveys union. We are now unified with Him in Christ, who “has broken down the middle wall of separation.”

When countries in conflict make peace, they usually do not become the best of friends. However, today’s verse indicates that not only is there an absence of hostility or war, but we are also united with God as His children, as seen in Ephesians 1:5.

This message of unity is not just historical but also relevant today. It reminds us that in Christ, all divisions (cultural, racial, or social) are overcome. Jesus’ work on the cross brings peace and reconciliation, making us one body in Him. Galatians 3:28 reinforces that there is neither Jew nor Gentile, for we are all one in Christ Jesus.

At your workplace, promote harmony and understanding by mediating conflicts, being empathetic, and showing a desire to mend relationships. At home, practise open communication and forgiveness, and create a calm, welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels safe and loved.

While we should lead holy lives separate from sin, we must resist constructing walls of separation that Christ has already broken down. Anyone in Christ is our brother or sister, regardless of tribe, country, skin colour, and language.
