Psalms 119:105- “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

The book of Psalms is filled with the songs and prayers offered to God by the nation of Israel. Their expressions of praise, faith, sorrow, and frustration cover the range of human emotions. Some of the Psalms dwell on the treasure of wisdom and God’s Word. This scripture is one among them.

“The Word of God is a lamp unto my feet.” In the Old Testament, the Word of God covered all aspects of human life – what to do, what not to do, how to do, how not to do, etc.(commandments and precepts) It covered aspects of worship (what to offer as sacrifice and how), cleanliness and everything to be done, according to the Will of God.
When one uses a lamp in any context – be it in the olden days or now – the lamp provides enough light to guide our feet for a few steps and no more. We will not be able to see the end of our journey.
“…and a light unto my path”. Now this part works conversely. Light given for an entire length of path has to be more powerful so the traveller sees the whole path although they walk only step by step.

In the New Testament, we know Jesus is the only Way to Heaven, the truth and the life. We know our end is victory in the name of Jesus, through Jesus. So, we must take each day (step by step) using God’s Word to guide our feet on the right path to life eternal, to center our life upon the one and only living God. This Creator God is King of all the earth and a refuge to all who trust in Him. God’s Word stays the same yesterday, today, and always. God’s promises ring true. God’s Word is the only thing we can depend upon.
