Proverbs 8:13
“The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.“
“Fear of the Lord is beginning of knowledge”(Proverbs 1:7). Scripture notes that “fear” of God is a crucial aspect of wisdom and learning. The term “fear,” as used in this expression, is not about terror or panic. Rather fear of God involves a submissive, respectful honor.
Proverbs 2:1-5 advises us to:
- Receive God’s Word and treasure His commands
- Incline an ear to wisdom and apply heart to understanding
- Be eager for discernment
- Seek wisdom as silver and search for it as a hidden treasure
Then we shall know the “Fear of God” and also find the knowledge of God. At its core, this perspective means recognizing who God is and recognizing His holiness and goodness. The effect of knowing God more is hating evil. Evil in all its form is contrary to God and His will. Where there is godly fear and consistent strong faith, pride and self-confidence have no room.
Fear of the Lord is accompanied by the desire for holiness and we can achieve it by the Grace of God. Gradually, we will be cleansed from pride, arrogance, perverse mouth, and every other evil. Willingly, we shall let go of all evil and continue to grow in the knowledge of God.
