God of Love

Romans 12:10  Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honour giving preference to one another.

The Lord Jesus was often tested by experts of the law. It is quite amazing that He almost always answered their question with another question!

And so it was when this expert in the law asked the Lord Jesus, how he could inherit eternal life. Since he was a man of the law, the Lord Jesus answer, or rather questioned, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” – Luke 10:26

The man quoted the two greatest laws in the Holy Bible, both of which are centred around love – to love the Lord and love your neighbour.

The Lord Jesus replied, “Do this and you will live.” – Luke 10:28

Of course, the man wasn’t going to concede defeat so easily. He had probably boasted to his friends, even challenged them, that he was going to catch the Lord Jesus off guard.

So, he asked the Lord, “And who is my neighbour?” – Luke 10:29

To answer the question in a way that he would fully understand, the Lord Jesus narrated the story of the good Samaritan:

There was a traveller who was beaten, robbed and laid to waste on the side of the road by thieves. A priest, followed by a Levite, passed the man in need of help but ignored him. Then came a Samaritan who showed love and compassion by taking the man to a hospital and paying his bills. (Luke 10:25-37)

Then the Lord Jesus asked the man, “Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” – Luke 10:36

Of course, it was the Samaritan!

The answer shook the man, whose best friends were priests and Levites. To make matters worse, Samaritans were viewed as people of a lower caste. But, the Lord Jesus showed the “expert in the law”, that our God is not a God of laws.

He is a God of Love! And He loves everyone equally!!

Yes, our God is the very definition of Love! And since He loved us so much that He created us in His image, we will never be truly happy unless we show love to one another.
