Psalm 125:2—”As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people from this time forth and forever.”
If we look at the mountains, the one thing we notice is its majestic look that never seems to change. Just like the mountains that were there during our yesteryears and still there today, God is stable, dependable, and unchanging. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. God surrounds us. God guards us. And “those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion.” This means that God can make us also to be like a mountain – stable and secure. God is our refuge and strength. If we trust in the Lord, we will have stability and security. Therefore, we should trust Him.
All those minds that are stayed on God, will be strong and stable. They shall be as firm as Mount Zion. They will be a mountain supported by providence(God), a holy mountain supported by God’s promise. They cannot be removed from their confidence in God. They abide for ever in God’s grace which is the earnest of their everlasting continuance in glory. They commit themselves to God and therefore will be safe from their enemies. Mountains may crumble, disintegrate, or face erosion and come to nothing. Even their rocks may be removed. But God’s covenant with his people cannot be broken, nor His care of them cease. Their troubles shall last no longer than their strength will bear them up under them. The rod of the wicked may come, may fall upon the righteous–upon their persons, their estates, their liberties, their families names, on any thing that falls to their lot–only it cannot reach their souls. And though it may come upon God’s people for a while or season, it shall not rest on them. The Lord will make all work together for their good. The wicked shall only act as a correcting rod on God’s people and not a destroying sword. This correcting rod also will not remain on them, otherwise they may distrust God’s promise, thinking God has cast them off.
God corrects us as our parent. He is caring and loving. He is merciful and gracious unlike humans and even our earthly parents. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people from this time forth and forever.
