Psalm 139:17-18
“How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You”.
David wonders with praise and expresses the greatness and majesty of God’s thought for him. He is so intimate with the person of God that he can understand the desire of GOD for him. He sees himself in the light of God’s thoughts for him.
There is a popular saying “What other people think of you is none of your business.” Most of us care too much about what others think of us. We should care what people think of us, and it should influence how we live in a good way. But our primary concern must be God’s thoughts toward us. Here we move from the narrow focus on individuals to an infinite and eternal perspective. We should wonder at the grace of God who knows us better than ourselves and knows the worst about us and yet has such infinite mercy and patience towards us.
God’s thoughts for us are our refuge. We know in Jeremiah 29:11-12, God says about His thoughts for us. The more we seek His thoughts through daily devotion, we will know His purpose and His nature. King David says about God’s thoughts for him in Psalm 56:9 – “This one thing I know: God is on my side”. Isn’t it so rewarding to know that the Mighty God has disposed His thoughts towards you and me?
God’s thinking implies His unchangeable nature. Whatever He intends will happen, even though people work to the contrary by all their might and cunning to hinder it from happening.
How do we know God’s thoughts? By listening to Him.
With all that God knows and all that He is, He does not forget us. David knows that he can fall asleep every night with confidence, saying that “when I awake, I am still with You”.
