Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:5
The mercy of God means that God sees us, and He saw us in our pitiful state. A state in which we were perishing, separated from Him, and in need of rescue. He was moved with compassion for us. Hence, He made a sovereign choice to have mercy upon us. We did not deserve it, but He did it because ‘God is mercy.’
Mercy is God’s heartfelt response to us who are perishing. He draws near to the broken-hearted and rescues them. There has been a divine intervention to step into our broken, hell-bound lives to deliver us from eternal destruction. 1 Peter 1:3 reads, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has caused us to be born again according to his great mercy.”
All salvation could be comprised of this one word – mercy!
God’s heartfelt compassion and tender heart drove Him to intervene in our lives. He did this by sending His Son Jesus and afflicted Him with our afflictions, brokenness and hurt. God is neither distant or aloof from us nor immune to our feelings. That is part of the reason why Christ became a man. Now, Jesus Christ has become our sympathetic High Priest. Jesus walked the valley of the shadow that took him to the Cross. He knows what it is to feel rejected by this world, to be the object of scorn, hatred, and mockery. Jesus knows what it is to suffer pain and injustice and what it is to go through what we go through.
When we pray in the name of Jesus, He bears our burdens and intercedes for us in His great mercy.
