Proverbs 4:23

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom sayings, mostly written by Solomon, designed to teach practical godly living. It speaks about everyday choices, relationships, words, money, and character. Today’s proverb essentially says, guard what is happening inside you because your inner life shapes your outer life.

Why does the Bible focus on the heart? In Scripture, the heart is not just emotions. It represents the control center of a person – thoughts, desires, decisions, motives. Your mind thinks, but your heart chooses. Your hands act, but your heart directs. That is why God targets the heart. If the heart is steady, then life will be steady.

The word “diligence” means careful, consistent attention. Not panic. Not obsession. It means intentional guarding. Like locking your door at night. Like choosing what you watch, what you dwell on, who you listen to. Ask yourself, what am I allowing to influence my heart daily? Is it bitterness, comparison, fear? Or truth, gratitude, hope?

Jesus connects this clearly in Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” What you value most will quietly shape you. If your treasure is approval, your heart will chase applause. If your treasure is God, your heart will grow secure.

The “issues of life” mean the springs or sources of everything you do. Your words, reactions, relationships, habits, even your laughter, flow from the heart. A guarded heart does not mean a closed heart. It means a guided one.

Whether you are young and forming dreams, midlife and managing responsibilities, or older and reflecting on legacy, your heart still matters. In this final week of Lent, let us ask ourselves: what are we feeding our hearts today, and where is it quietly leading us?
