The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights. Habakkuk 3:19 (NIV)
Even though we may be in the valley, God can give us the power we need to climb the mountains in life. We can rejoice in the Lord even though we are going through trying situations. God gave the prophet Habakkuk new strength to overcome the current adversity.
According to Habakkuk, God makes his feet like a deer’s, allowing him to climb great heights. Habakkuk depicts a female deer running along the mountain tops. As she climbs the cliffs, she does so with poise, assurance, freedom, and an absence of inhibition or fear. Without the valleys she crossed, the deer will never experience the genuine thrill of the mountain height.
Habakkuk begins his book with many questions: “Is God concerned? Is God just? Does God exist?” Instead of looking for solutions elsewhere, Habakkuk continued to ask questions and was given the appropriate answers by God.
Habakkuk’s experience can be ours today. Even though we may be in a valley of despair, God can lead us to heights where we can run like deer. Everyone who honestly approaches God with their concerns and seeks Him out will always find life easy to navigate.
We should therefore be inspired to continue pursuing God. Despite our concerns and questions, wherever we may be, in our journey from doubt to faith. Because Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose to life so that we could experience abundant life, the Lord will walk alongside us and be the guide, companion and strength He promised.
