John 1: 9 – 10: “He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.”
When the power goes out, our immediate reaction is to find a light source. Darkness makes us feel handicapped because our eyes were created to see in the light. In the same way, when we were born into sin, we were groping around in deep darkness. But when we decided to believe in Christ, our eyes were opened.
Our Lord Jesus is the one true and living Light. He came into our darkened world to offer light-giving life as the only remedy to sin. “The true Light which gives light to every man.”—that is everyone who receives it (v.9). God’s solution to the blindness and darkness of the world is new birth. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”? (John 3:3). We can’t see it, and so we can’t receive it. Therefore, we can’t enter it. The Light (Jesus) gives us new life, and new life is only attainable when we are born again.
Whoever has the Son has life… (1 John 5:12). Have we truly made Jesus Lord of our lives? Because when we do, He unites Himself with us. His Holy Spirit causes our blind eyes to see and our deaf ears to hear. And only when we can see and hear, we are truly alive.
