Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4 NIV
In Matthew 4:4, we read Jesus’ response to the devil’s temptation in the wilderness. After fasting for forty days and nights, Jesus is physically weak and hungry. The devil tempts Him to turn stones into bread to satisfy His hunger. Jesus, however, responds by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, emphasizing that physical sustenance is not enough to sustain life. True life and fulfillment come from every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
This passage teaches us a profound truth about our spiritual lives. While we need food to nourish our bodies, our souls require the nourishment that only God’s Word can provide. Just as we wouldn’t go a day without eating, we shouldn’t go a day without seeking spiritual nourishment from Scripture. God’s Word guides, strengthens and provides us with wisdom and comfort.
In our daily lives, we often prioritize physical needs and material desires. We work hard to ensure we have food, shelter, and comfort. While these are important, Jesus reminds us that spiritual sustenance is even more critical. Without a strong spiritual foundation, we risk losing sight of what truly matters.
Let God’s Word influence our actions, decisions, and interactions with others. Let us strive to embody the teachings of Christ in our daily lives.
