1 John 2:1
“My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
An advocate is someone who pleads the cause of another, especially in a court of law. In today’s verse, John urges the people of God to avoid sin, but he doesn’t stop there. He also reminds them that even if they sin, they have Jesus Christ as an advocate on their behalf.
Our Lord Jesus Christ committed no sin, yet paid the price for our sins on the cross. He bore our shame and punishment so we may live in freedom. He is the Righteous One who is qualified to champion our cause with the Father. He stands as the Great High Priest, mediating on our behalf. And, He is also the Lamb that was sacrificed in our stead. What a blessing it is to know that there is Someone up above advocating for us!
If you are beating yourself up for sinning yet again, confess your sins and turn back to the Lord. Don’t let guilt trap you in a downward spiral. However, as a recipient of the Lord’s forgiveness, don’t let His sacrifice be in vain. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead you in paths of righteousness.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the gift of salvation. I confess my sins and receive Your forgiveness. Help me not take Your sacrifice for granted but live according to Your will. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
