1 John 5:14
Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
Prayer is one of the most vital aspects of a child of God’s life. What is prayer? It is direct communication with God – a personal, ongoing conversation with Him. Prayer fosters a deeper relationship with God and serves as a means of worship, thanksgiving, confession, and supplication.
Since supplication is part of prayer, we must be mindful of what we ask. In Matthew 7:7–8, Jesus says, “Ask, and it will be given to you….” Mark 11:24 declares, “…whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” In John 14:13, Jesus promises, “I will do whatever you ask in My name….” According to 1 John 5:14, we can be confident that we are heard when we pray according to God’s will.
But how do we discern God’s will? By knowing God through His Word. The Scriptures reveal God’s nature, character, and attributes. Since God never acts contrary to His values, our requests must also be in harmony with them.
When we ask anything according to God’s will, He hears us. This is both a promise and a blessed assurance. 1 John 5:14 encourages us to shape our prayers according to His will – revealed through His Word, cultivated in a surrendered life, and confirmed through godly counsel. Then we have the assurance that our supplications are heard.
In this season of Lent, let’s lay aside selfish desires, align with God’s will, and trust that He hears us. May our prayers become channels of His grace, flowing like living water and nourishing not only us but also those around us (John 7:38).
