Isaiah 60:19 NIV
The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the Lord will be your everlasting Light, and your God will be your glory.
In this verse, Isaiah depicts a future where God’s presence replaces all earthly sources of light and glory. The sun and moon, which govern the day and night, will no longer be necessary because the Lord Himself will be our eternal Light. This signifies a divine transformation, where God’s glory surpasses and outshines all natural and created lights.
Isaiah’s prophecy indicates a time of ultimate fulfilment when God’s presence will illuminate everything. This vision can also be seen in Revelation 21:23, which says, “The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light”. Here, the absence of the sun and moon in the new Jerusalem highlights the sufficiency and supremacy of God’s light in the eternal city.
Psalm 84:11 rightly adds to these scriptures when the psalmist says “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly”. God provides light, grace, protection, and glory to those who follow Him.
This verse calls us, as believers, to focus on the everlasting nature of God’s light and glory. It reminds us that in the end, all we need is found in Him. His presence will be our guide, our strength, and our source of eternal joy. Let us live with this hope, knowing that God’s light will never fade and His glory will always surround us.
