1 Peter 3:15
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;
Peter intended to bring comfort to persecuted believers in the midst of their increasing persecution. In the preceding scripture, Peter exhorts them: “…even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled,“ (1 Peter 3:14).
What is this hope that causes people to ask how believers could be fearless in the face of persecution? 1 Peter 1: 3-5 says, “According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
This is our hope. When Jesus is our Lord and we honor Him as most holy, we can live fearlessly through adversity and persecution. Hope may be invisible, but it manifests as fearlessness and joy in the midst of trials. This would certainly pique the curiosity of unbelievers. And how do we communicate our hope? With gentleness and respect.
Yes, there are seasons of great challenges. But allow the Holy Spirit to minister to you, sustain you, and keep your eyes on the reward that lies ahead. In these seasons especially, know that all things work together for good to those who love God, who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).
