Psalm 18:1-2 NKJV
“I will love You, O Lord, my Strength. The Lord is my Rock and my Fortress and my Deliverer; my God, my Strength, in whom I will trust; my Shield and the Horn of my Salvation.”
In this passionate declaration, David pours his heart in gratitude to God, using multiple metaphors to describe God’s protective and strengthening presence in his life. These words were written after God had delivered him from his enemies, including Saul, and reflect a deep, personal experience of God’s faithfulness.
The imagery of God as a Rock and Fortress appear throughout Scripture, emphasising His unchanging nature and dependable protection. Deuteronomy 32:4 states that God “is the Rock, His works are perfect.” In Psalm 62:2, we find another testament: “Truly He is my Rock and my Salvation; He is my Fortress, I will never be shaken.”
You might have encountered these scriptures several times before, but take time to ponder the great victories that God has granted you in the past. Count all the countless blessings in your life and praise God. Reflecting with gratitude is a way of telling God that you are thankful for His perfect ways and provisions—it is a pleasing aroma in the mighty presence of God.
Each description in today’s verse reveals a different aspect of God’s character—His stability, protection, and power to save. When storms of life rage around us, we can find unshakeable security in our relationship with Him. Take heart in knowing that the same God who was David’s Rock stands ready to be your Fortress today.
