The one thing you can boast about

Jeremiah 9:23–24 – “Thus says the Lord: ‘Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.'”

The world around us has become so competitive that people feel the need to boast about who they are and what they’ve done in order to be recognised. But the Bible tells us to act differently. In the verses above, God gives us a direct instruction on what we cannot boast about.

It’s easy to look at our wisdom and intellect and think we’ve gotten this far because of our aptitude. Those who are talented may feel the urge to glory in the level of their skills. It’s tempting to look at our bank balance and allow it to dictate our financial security. But these are things we can’t really boast about, because they are temporary.

We are who we are, and we have what we have purely by the grace of God. Our education might get outdated, we may lose our jobs, we might fall ill or face a financial loss. But the one thing we can count on is the God we know. The only thing we can boast about is that we know Jesus. Everything else we hold on to might fail us, but Jesus never will. In the midst of your busy week, make this your declaration and your only boast… “I know my Jesus, and my Jesus never fails!”
