Under the shadow of His wings

Psalm 36:7
“How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.“

Psalm 36 is a Psalm David penned probably when he was struck at either by Saul or by Absalom; for in it he complains of the malice of his enemies against him, but triumphs in the goodness of God to him.
Psalm starts with listing the sinfulness of the wicked (Psalm36:1-4), the goodness of God, and how gracious He is to all and especially to His children (Psalm 36:5-9). By this David is encouraged to pray for his deliverance and preservation, and also pray for all saints.

This psalm emphasizes God’s lovingkindness, i.e., His tenderness and consideration towards His children and Yes! it is precious. Because of this attribute of God, His children can “put their trust under the shadow of His wings “.

The phrase shadow of your wings is used multiple times in the Bible. (Psalm 17:8, Psalm 36:7, Psalm 57:1, Psalm 91:1). It reminds us of either chicken or duck. Mother Chick always protects her chicks from predators or any danger by gathering them under her wings. A duck guides her ducklings by wrapping them with her wings and leading them the way they should swim. Yes, we would have seen it in any animation stories.

Therefore, the Shadow of God’s wings is a place of safety, however not static and motionless. It is a place of direction too. This Psalm reminds us that God’s loving kindness or tenderness and consideration towards us is more than enough to trust His protection and direction in our lives.

There is no situation we go through where God can’t protect and direct us. His protection is definitely better than that of a chicken and he directs better than a duck. Therefore, we will not be put to shame when we trust and hope in him. Let us always dwell in His presence and experience his tender compassion and expect Him to protect and direct us always. This is the way of a blessed life.
