Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
The world follows a common phrase – “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.” However, the book of Proverbs has a contrasting perspective to that of the wise sayings of the world. Research also supports the Bible, reflecting that our casual talk can have lasting harm.
When Jesus was tested in the wilderness, He quoted the Scripture alone to rebuke the devil. He refrained from idle talk or angry outbursts, even after enduring 40 days of fasting in the wilderness. Unfortunately, our lives are far contrasting to that of our Master, Jesus Christ. Often, our circumstances trigger us, ultimately leading to shameful testimonies in our lives. James 3:6 complements the verse for today, highlighting the dangers of misusing our tongues.
In our daily conversations, it’s critical to acknowledge and recollect God’s standards for our speech. There are more than 50 verses in the Bible regarding idle talk, reminding us to be mindful of what we speak. God has a purpose for our lives, and our talk should reflect His will. Unless we are Spirit-filled, our words will mirror the world around us. We can change our destinies with God’s power within us and through the faith we express in our conversations. Children of God must talk the walk instead of living in hypocrisy.
Today, enjoy the fruits of God’s blessings by choosing to speak life through your words. Paraphrasing the Apostle Paul, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—talk about such things (Philippians 4:8). With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, may our lives be a blessing.
