John 16:22 NKJV
Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.
Our Lord Jesus Christ declared these words during the last supper with His disciples. He, the Omniscient Savior, knew that in just a few hours, their world would come crashing down. The disciples would scatter and their beloved Rabbi would be crucified like a common criminal.
Comprehending the pain and sorrow that lay ahead for the disciples, Jesus encouraged them with words of hope. He assured them that this wasn’t the final chapter of their lives. Like a woman in labor, there is joy despite the pain because a child is born into the world (John 16:21). Without the cross, there would be no resurrection. Our joy as children of God would not have been possible without the sacrifice and suffering of His Son.
Like the disciples, when we find ourselves in seasons of pain and sorrow, we grow numb and perplexed wondering what steps to take next. Yet, rest assured knowing that Jesus Christ has given us the Holy Spirit to be our Comforter and Counselor. In our moments of desperation, the Holy Spirit will redeem us with a joy that the world can’t give (Romans 15:13). The world can’t steal away the joy God grants us.
Like the disciples, take heart today, knowing that God can resurrect our dead prayers. He will fulfill His promises concerning us. Remember, the joy of the Lord is our strength. Even though we pass through the toughest valleys of our lives, the Shepherd of our souls is there to guide us through. His rod and staff will comfort us. Whatever comes tomorrow, we’ve got the joy!
