In ancient Israel, the temple or tabernacle was the most important, respected, and the holiest place. A place where God lived, met and spoke with His people, the Israelites. The evidence of God’s presence in the temple was unmistakable and visible for all to see. It was a pillar of cloud or fire that led and shielded Israel in all circumstances.
In this Psalm, we read King David’s love for the Lord’s temple. He longed to abide in the temple, never to be too far from God’s presence. David professes this yearning to be the singular drive of his heart. God’s purpose for the tabernacle was that He might dwell among and fellowship with His people. Without this relationship, the temple would fail to serve its purpose.
In the new testament, we see God’s presence transitioned from the temple to live in every believer through the Holy Spirit by their union with Christ. The believers are the temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwells in us.
God’s purpose for us as His temple remains the same
– to live in deep intimacy with our Lord
– to be joyful, holy and righteous because of the Lord within us.
– to live in peace and believe that prayers uttered will receive an answer.
– to become carriers of God’s presence so the lost, least and the lonely will find God.
Let our lives glorify the Lord as we enjoy His presence. here on earth!
