03 Thank you pastor Sani and our team for leading us in worship. Shall we do our confessions loud and clear? I believe in the almighty God, our father and creator. I believe in Lord Jesus Christ, God and my savior. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin. He suffered, died, and rose again. He ascended into heaven. He shall soon come again. I believe in God the Holy Spirit who is worshiped and my guide. I believe in the Holy fellowship, faithful giving and service to God in this church. I believe the Holy Bible is a perfect word of God. I am what it says I am. I have what it says I have and I can do what it says I can do. Today, as I learn the word of God here in my spiritual family, I am blessed, healed, and anointed for a holy and victorious living. I will never again be the same in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. Please be seated in God's
07 presence. What an amazing time of worshiping our Lord this morning. Hallelujah. Amen. I'm sure that we must have got this Bible study material. And if you haven't, our volunteers are here to help you out. And those who are watching us online today, we want to welcome you into our Bible study. And the details are there in the description box below. So let's look into the Bible study. Are you all ready for that? >> All right. Okay. So let's look into the first page. Okay. The introduction. So you know we we have been learning about parables, right? Parables are stories that Lord Jesus shared uh to his disciples and to the people. So you know when we look at the life of our Lord Jesus, Lord Jesus is the greatest communicator that the world has ever seen. Hallelujah. You know uh no one could communicate truth, love, grace like Christ Jesus our Lord because he
10 himself was truth. He himself was love. He himself was grace. Hallelujah. So he had a way of communicating to people and one of the primary tool that he used was through storytelling. You know his messages were something even a small little child could understand. Whenever he spoke nothing went above the head of people. It just went straight into the hearts of people. Amen. So he spoke with power. He spoke with grace. His uh words were life-changing. It was inspirational. So on one hand, you know, his messages were so simple for a child to understand, but on the other hand, it was deep. It was profound. You know, there were the religious leaders who were just waiting to trap him, to question him. And for them, his messages were a threat. Amen. So it was profound on one side, but on the other side, it was so simple. You know that's the
14 goodness of our Lord. He made the message of gospel so simple for each one of us so that we will not lose eternal life. Hallelujah. All right. So the parable of unforgiving servant it is the most one of the most powerful and challenging teaching of Christ Jesus our Lord. All right. So here apostle Peter he asked a question to the lord you know asking that lord how many times I must forgive my brother or my sister and then he went on to put a number by saying up to seven times. So there is a reason to it. So according to the rabbanic tradition or according to the Jewish tradition of those days you know you could forgive your offender for three times. The tradition says that you can forgive your offender for three times. And I always wondered after three times what's next? But Peter, he was so generous. So he, you know, when he put across this
17 marriage to Jesus, he went on to ask this question. Can you know we forgive a brother or a sister up to seven times? You know, I was just thinking maybe Peter had a lot of tiff with people around him. You know unlike many of us here the thing is that forgiveness is not just a one-time act. It is I would say that it is a lifetime job and it is something that starts within us first and then in our family with our husband with our wives with our children in our relationship. So forgiveness is not just a one-time act. I would say that there is no retirement from forgiveness. So, so here Peter was asking this profound question. So this is my imagination. Okay. So what did Jesus do? So Jesus took that number seven and put a zero beside it and said 70* 7. So when Peter when he heard that probably he
21 would have been thinking oh no what is this or maybe he would have fainted. But Jesus had that beautiful smile on his face. Hallelujah. Go to the next page. So Lord Jesus here, he was not saying that you must keep a count on forgiveness. That's not his point was. So 70 * 7 makes it 491 offense. So that that that was that was not Jesus' point. You know, I heard this joke and it goes like this. There was this lady, she got saved and she was so excited about her faith that she had in Christ Jesus and all of it, but she had an alcoholic husband and he would always beat her up and all of it. Especially on a Sunday, she make sure that she finish all her house duties and then she is out to worship God. But every Sunday before she could leave the church, the husband would pick up a fight with her and make sure that he will beat her up or slap her. So one fine Sunday she was getting ready to go to church her husband was
25 getting ready to beat her up. So on one side you know while she was getting ready suddenly this Bible verse came into her mind and that was this you know that the verse was about the words of Lord Jesus that goes on to say that you know when somebody slaps you on your cheek turn the other and show the other cheek. So before she could think, slap came on her face. Husband slapped her. So she just turned around and husband slapped her on the other cheek too. So now she made this prayer before God saying, "God, I'm just running over cheeks." And then she turned around and slapped her husband. So the point here is this. That is how we think about forgiveness. You know, I'm not giving ideas for spouses here. Okay? The point here is this. We think how many times we must forgive. We always put a limit for forgiveness. How many times I must forgive you know my husband or wife or my children or my you know colleague. How many times
29 does forgiveness have a limit? That's the way we look at it. But here Lord Jesus goes on to say you know you need not have to count how many times you forgive. It is about cultivating. It is it is about choosing a heart of forgiveness. Hallelujah. A heart of forgiveness that you choose the willingness to forgive over and over again. That is something that we must cultivate in our lives. Hallelujah. Amen. So you know when we look at this world, this world is a broken world, right? You know um but but let me tell you this even though we live in a broken world the Christian life is a most victorious life. >> Hallelujah. Life with Jesus is exciting. Amen. Even though there are highs and lows that we go through, life with Jesus is just amazing. God has called us to live to lead a victorious life. But that does not mean you know our lives are going to be like a bed of roses. No, not
32 at all. Please don't expect that there will be trials, there will be hurts, there will be highs and lows that we experience in our life. But in all that we can assure ourselves that we are not alone in it. We have God by our side. >> Amen. Hallelujah. I think somebody wanted to clap. Let's give God a wonderful hand clap. So here it goes on to say in page two, the heart of God's kingdom is not a heart that is bound by wounds of the past, but that is forgiving. So the heart of God's kingdom is a forgiving, you know, attitude. So God has called us not to just live a wounded, wimpy, you know, a painful failure life. That's not the intention of God. The Bible goes on to say that the kingdom of God is all about righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Hallelujah. So when we uh you know this is the kind of life that God expects each one of us to have. You know when we have righteousness,
34 peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, guess what? That is something that comes from forgiveness. Hallelujah. Go to page number three. It talks about the parable of the unforgiving servant. So here Matthew 18:23-35. Okay, I'll just explain this to you. So here Lord Jesus is explaining that the kingdom of God is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. And then he goes on to say that when this particular servant came forward to settle the accounts, he found out that this servant was uh in a deep debt. I mean he owed the king 10,000 bags of gold. All right. So looking at the servant the king understood that this man will not be able to repay the debt. So he gave a suggestion by saying since you can't pay this why don't you you know you I I'm going to take you your wife your children I'm going to take you as you know repay for the debt. So this
39 servant now he cries out and he said please please forgive me please give me some time I will repay all the debt. So now the Bible says that this king he had compassion and he said okay I'm going to just declare you as debtfree. So his debt was absolutely cancelled. All right. So now he's so joyful. He's so excited. He make the announcement. He goes to his family. So there is a huge celebration going on. And now what happens? he came across with a fellow servant uh of his um and this servant owned him 100 silver coins. So just as he came across this man began to grab him, choke him and said give me my money. He began to you know pressurize him and then this man this fellow servant also begged this man by saying please give me some time I will repay it. But this man wouldn't listen and at last he was handed over to the jailers to be tortured. So now there were people who were watching those things. So they
42 went and reported to the king by saying that the servant whom you forgave and this is what he has done to his fellow servant. So the master becomes very angry and then he called this servant and says I had canled all the debt of yours because you begged me. Shouldn't you have mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you? And then he was handed over to the jailers to be tortured until he paid the debt. So here Lord Jesus he goes on to say this is how my heavenly father will treat each of you each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart. Go to page number four. Okay. So in this parable there are three scenes. Okay. Scene number one is the king's mercy where this man who had this enormous debt. It was cancelled in no time. Number two it is the servants's unforgiveness to the fellow servant you
44 know who owned him just 100 silver coins. And scene three it is the king's judgment. All right. So the core message of this parable is the is this that those who receive forgiveness must extend it to others. Go to page number five. So now we are going to look at three things here. We going to look at the mandate of forgiveness. Okay. Why forgiveness is important? That's number one. And now number two is what forgiveness is not about so that we can keep ourselves from wrong thoughts and wrong ideas about forgiveness. And number three what forgiveness is about so that we can live a free life. All right. So let's look at the mandate of forgiveness. Can we read that together? Forgiveness is a conscious deliberate decision to relinquish failings of resentment or vengeance towards a person or group who has harmed you regardless
48 of whether they actually deserve your forgiveness. You know, simple as it forgiveness is a conscious deliberate decision that you make with yourself before God. Amen. The God who forgave you, you are going to extend that forgiveness to others. That is what the definition of forgiveness is about. All right. So now let's look at what forgiveness is not about. It goes on to say excusing as offense or pretending it did not happen. Okay. So that I I uh I'll give an illustration. Just imagine that you had a friend or maybe um you had someone whom you brought brought up from nowhere. Okay, there was this person who was just aimless but you picked up this person, you gave a life and purpose to this person and now this person is very successful. You trusted this friend or this dear person so much. But then later on you came to know that this person was working against you. this person was
51 involved in you know uh tarnishing your reputation. So when you come to know this the immediate reaction that you experience is like you know you can't believe this in the first place you feel so hurt you you know there's a range of motion that goes within the inside you know you are angry you you you feel like crying or you you know there's a lot of things that go through but to say that I don't care it doesn't affect me um you know um let him do what he wants to say that is an absolute absolute lie. The truth is that you are hurt, right? There is a wound because you never expected this to happen from such a such a person like this whom you gave and whom you invested to. So you are hurt. So forgiveness is not to pretend it did not happen. But forgiveness is to say that yes, I am hurt. I am wounded. Of course, I know I am betrayed. But I will not allow this wound to control my life.
54 Hallelujah. Amen. Number two is that forgetting the wrong or removing all consequences. So here imagine another illustration. Let me give you imagine that somebody stole money from your business and you came to know the person and you have forgiven this person. But that does not mean that that person will continue in that same position to steal again. So forgiveness does not erase wisdom here. Forgiveness just remove the bitterness from there. You have forgiven this person but you are not going to give another chance for this person to steal again. Hallelujah. So forgiveness erase wisdom. Forgiveness does not erase wisdom but it removes the bitterness from our heart. Number three, forgiveness is not about immediate reconciliation though it can open doors for restoration. Imagine that you are in a relationship.
56 So this relationship is now a broken relationship. Okay? So you you have gone through the hurts and the struggles and all of it. So don't expect reconciliation to happen immediately. All right? Give that relationship some time. You know, allow you to go through the process of healing so that you know you can in the meantime you can also build healthy boundaries around you and you can handle the relationship rightly. All right. Number four is forgiveness is not a sign of weakness. Instead, it requires humility and strength to forgive repeatedly as Jesus in instructed 70 * 7. So now let's look at what forgiveness is. Are you all with me? So forgiveness is an internal transformation. Okay? It is to let go of the power that offense and the offender has hold you. Number two, it is to free yourself. And number three, it is choosing peace over a grudge. You know,
00 just imagine that you are carrying a bag on your shoulder. A big heavy baggage on your shoulder. You are carrying this and um initially you thought that you could carry this bag. But now it has come to a point where you cannot carry this. You're just waiting to dump this bag somewhere. And now as you were passing by a river or maybe as you were passing by the sea you just threw the entire luggage that baggage into the river or to the sea. So the experience that you feel at that time is like you know free your body feels free. That is exactly what forgiveness does in our lives. Hallelujah. So forgiveness is God's divine work in us. And I mean through forgiveness guess what? God turns our pain into peace. Hallelujah. Amen. Every sort of anger, he brings freedom into that situation. And not only that, our wounds will be turned into a testimony of grace. All right. Go to the next chapter page, page number six. So the
03 classic example for forgiveness is modeled in the life of Christ Jesus our Lord. You know the Bible goes on to say that man while Jesus was on the cross in that excruciating pain he went on to make this prayer by saying Lord father we father forgive these people they don't know what they are doing you know when he made this prayer or while he was on that cross you see that his mercy his forgiveness his love it was unconditional it was proactive and it was available for anyone and everyone who asked for it and who never deserved it. You know there's a beautiful passage that goes on to say you know the thief on the cross when he told Lord Jesus Lord when you come in your kingdom please remember me and Lord Jesus went on to say today you will be with me in paradise. That is the power of forgiveness. Hallelujah. Forgiveness is always immediate. Forgiveness is undeserved. Forgiveness is lifechanging.
08 Hallelujah. So here you see that this man even though he was he was canceled this uh 100,000 you know gold whatever thing that was even though it was cancelled from him he refused to forgive the man who had a lesser debt. All right so let's look into page number seven there it talks about the biblical word for forgiveness that deepens our understanding. The Hebrew word is nasa. Naza means to send away, to release or to sorry to yeah Naza to bear, to carry away. And the Greek word is abi to send away, to release or to cancel. You know when we deeply look into this passages, we realize that this is exactly what Christ did for us on the cross. Hallelujah. He bore our sins. He bore our nasa and he canled our debts. He canceled our ab life of freedom. Hallelujah. So the king
13 here he did the same to the servant but he failed to do that to his fellow servant. All right. So now let's look at unforgiveness. The definition of unforgiveness. Unforgiveness can be one of the most deceptive and deadly trap of the enemy that we can fall into. Go to the next page. So here we see that this unforgiving uh so the master here he had forgiven this servant. So what did he do? He handed over this man to the jailers. So now let's look at uh unforgiveness. Unforgiveness invites tormentors into a person's life. So when we keep unforgiveness in us, guess what? It brings forth tormentors. So what are the kind of tormentors that unforgiveness brings in our lives? Number one, it is guilt, it is shame, it is anger, it is anxiety, it is jealousy, bitterness, sleepless nights, broken relationship.
17 These are all the tormentors of unforgiveness. So something interesting that we find here is this the master he did not directly you know torture him. He just you know handed over him to the jailers. And this is exactly what happened with God Almighty. You know when we keep unforgiveness in our lives, God just withdraw his hand from our lives. God's hand it represents his presence, his power, his protection. So once God's hand is withdrawn from our lives, guess what? The enemy enters into our lives and inflict us. Okay. So let's look at the uh the third paragraph that goes on to say the torment of unforgiveness is a self-made and a multi-layered prison. So we must understand that our hearts our hearts are like um how do I say our hearts are like a house that is filled with rooms or filled with compartments. All right. So in our hearts God expects godly attributes to
21 flow. Of course we have been learning on the biatitudes of the Lord this month. So God wants godly attributes to flow in our hearts. Galatians 5:22-23 talks about the fruits of the Holy Spirit. So when one compartment is poisoned what happens all the other compartments get affected. So this is what happen you know when we keep unforgiveness. So it is a self-made multi-layered prison and it affects us spiritually emotionally as well as physically. When you talk about the spiritual part of it, you know, when we keep unforgiveness to people, when we are unwilling to forgive, you know, people around us, what happens? We are actually creating a wall between us and God. No matter how many, you know, kind of fasting and prayers that we do, no matter whatever ministry or good works that we do, it will not reach God because we has we have created a wall between us and God and that is unforgiveness. Okay. So number two is it
24 affects us emotionally. So what happens when there is unforgiveness in us? We are trapped in our past. We keep you know we keep reminding ourselves of the pain the affliction the struggles the memories of relationships or whatever that we have been through it keep replaying in our mind. So even if God bless you with another blessing or maybe a beautiful healthy family life or a marriage or a friendships or whatever, you are unable to enjoy that, you are unable to trust those relationships because there is unforgiveness in you. Hallelujah. Number three is it affects us physically. So the turmoil that happens on the inside, the commotion that happens on the inside, it is always revealed on the outside. It affects our body. How does it affects us? It affects us, you know, by causing sleeplessness, chronic tension, weriness, you know, panic attacks. In in various ways, it began to affect us. Go to the next page,
27 page number nine. So, it talks unforgiveness. It talks about unforgiveness is like a leaving a wound untreated and bitterness is the infection that sets in quietly. Just imagine that there is a wound on your hand or on on your leg. Maybe it's a deep wound. It's a deep cut. So you decided to just ignore it. But then the more we ignore, even though nothing is seen on the outside, you know, infection begins to slowly creep. It begins to step in. So what happens? Even though nothing is visible on the outside, the infection slowly begins to spread and slowly you can see the redness coming you know over that uh particular place and then be it begin to spread all over and then when we leave it unattended what happens the entire body gets affected and that is what forgi unforgiveness does in our lives. But forgiveness is a decision to stop the infection. So forgiveness is more or
30 less like an antibiotic that stops the unforgiveness, the acts of unforgiveness in our lives and leads us into true healing. All right, go to the next paragraph that goes on to say in page number nine, second paragraph. So forgiving others is not about earning God's forgiveness or earning salvation. So sometimes we think oh if I keep forgiving people in that way I can earn some salvation in that way I can earn some rewards from heaven. You know let me tell you this of course you can have rewards from heaven but that doesn't uh help you in earning salvation. So salvation is already a done matter. Christ did for us on the cross freely right? So salvation is a done matter. So when we forgive others, what happens? We are stepping into the freedom that Christ has given us and that also gives us an amazing opportunity to uh to to value to represent the kingdom values. All right, go to the next page. Page
33 number 10. It talks about forgiven people forgive others. Can we read that together? We do not forgive to become forgiven. We forgive because we are forgiven. Amen. Hallelujah. So when we refuse to forgive, what happens? We are actually making the gospel of Jesus irrelevant to the people around us. So we probably may not understand the the kind of you know harm that we are doing to the gospel. So because of the heart of gospel is a story of divine forgiveness. When we keep unforgiveness in us that insults God that insults the message of the gospel. You know I want to share a true story that happened in our country in the year 1999. There was this Australian missionary graham stains. Uh I don't know many of you whether you remember this or not. Uh for this Australian
36 missionary and his dear wife, they spent decades in the parts of Orisa or or Odisha, however you call it. Um you know, they lived there with their three children, looking after the lepros, the lepers and serving the leprosy people. You know, they made sure that they looked after the people who were, you know, downcast in the society. But one fine day this uh missionary and his precious sons were brutally burned alive by the kill you know by the uh extremist. So this was a whole shocking incident for the entire world you know uh it was uh you know a shocking inc it was terrible. It was really bad. But the most shocking you know statement that shook the world was his wife's statement. She went on to say that I don't keep any sort of unforgiveness to the killers. I don't keep any bitterness to the people who have taken the life of my husband and my
39 precious sons. You know when she made that statement that statement was not because she was weak or because she was helpless. She made that statement because of the kind of deep faith, the unshakable faith that she had in Christ Jesus our Lord. You know, the forgiveness was not easy for her. The way to the cross was so heavy, but she chose to respond like her savior >> who crucified him. Hallelujah. >> Amen. So that is what forgiveness is all about. So the next thing that we can learn is that we cannot hide unforgiveness. You know when we have unforgiveness in us, it is some of the other way revealed on the outside and people around you will know that there is unforgiveness in us. And that's exactly what happened here in this context where the people around this unforgiving servant they went and reported to the king saying this is what
42 this man did to his fellow servant. All right. So go to the next page, page number 11. So as I told you, every time when we you know keep unforgiveness in us, you know, we are disgracing the gospel of Lord Jesus. So we can ask these three questions to ourselves. Number one is will I be satisfied with the same pavement that satisfied a holy God? Will I adopt the same merciful attitude that Christ displayed on the cross? Will I choose to forgive so that father's merciful character is glorified through my life? Go to the next page. Okay. Forgiveness does not erase the consequences of sin. Forgiveness is not about forgiveness is about releasing others from the debt they owe us and the wrongs they have committed against us. So consequences are about upholding responsibility. So consequences are not about nurturing a grudge. They are tools that God used to protect. A beautiful example that I want to show you is from
44 the life of David. You know, David when he committed adultery with another man's wife, you know, and later on he killed her husband who was innocent, who and who was so loyal to David. So now, prophet Nathan, he comes to David and says, "You are wrong. You have sinned before God." And the immediate reply of David was, "I'm sorry, God. Please forgive me." God. He asked for forgiveness and the Bible says God forgave him. But then prophet Nathan said something very interesting there. He went on to tell David sword will not leave your family. And even though David was forgiven on one side, consequences it began to play a role in his life. You know at one point his son died and there was lot of conflicts in the family and his name was tarnished. But in all this we see that David became closer to God. And in all this God still went on to say that he is a man after my own heart. Hallelujah. So consequences and
48 forgiveness they are things that go together. Consequences are not just God's wrath or anything. You know through forgiveness what happens. You know when we go through that that phase of our life forgiveness brings mercy on one side and consequences it brings accountability and growth on the other side. Okay. Go to the next uh page page number 14 that talks about forgiveness does not always lead to reconciliation. So forgiveness is a decision that you make by yourself before God about a past offense. And reconciliation is a process between two people. So let's look at this. Reconciliation is a two-way street where where there are more than one person involved. All right? So it requires spec specific condition. Whereas forgiveness is a one-way street. It is between you and God. So you can forgive someone who have abused you or who have been
50 manipulative, who have been untrustworthy to you. But you are not required to reconcile and place yourself in a back of position for vulnerability. But when it comes to your marriage, if it is, if the reconciliation is something that is required in your marriage, then you got to rebuild your trust, honesty and take this, you know, go through this process prayerfully, you know, looking forward for, you know, mutual understanding with each other. Go to page number 15. So there we see there is um um you know a table there. Forgiveness versus reconciliation. Forgiveness the direction is vertical. It is between you and God. Reconciliation it is horizontal. It is between you and that person or more than a person. Forgiveness who is involved? It is you who is involved. In reconciliation it is you and the other person. In forgiveness, the core action is releasing a past debt. In reconciliation, it is building a future
53 trust. What is required in forgiveness? Your obedience in Christ. And in reconciliation, the genuine repentance plus your willingness. And the goal in forgiveness is your freedom. And in reconciliation, it is a restored relationship. So here, go to the next page. Page number 16 is a beautiful protocol for forgiveness. All right? You know when we bring our pain before God you know God has a way of healing it. So maybe you can go home and go through this you know number one it is to thank God for forgiving you know take time to thank God uh acknowledge the finished work of cross when we begin a prayer and number two it is to ask God whom do I forgive? Please bring it into remembrance and surely God will bring you know those names or those incidents into your mind so that you can go ahead with forgiving that person or that incident. Number three it is to repent of your sin. Tell God, God I'm sorry. Maybe I was unaware of it or maybe I did not want to forgive this person but I'm
56 repenting of my sin. All right. Number four it is to uh you know choose forgiveness by naming the person. Whoever has hurt you, name that person and that particular offense. You don't have to do this in public. This is between you and God. Do it in private. All right? Then before God, you know, you declare and say that I release this person. I release that offense that this person has done to me. And then number five, it is to seal it with God's blessing. You know, when we say that God, I release this person from my life. I'm releasing this person from my depth. And then we when we say that I'm blessing that person, you know, it is like removing the power of bitterness completely from our lives. Number six, it is to commit not to remember the offense. Many times offense will come but then ignore it. You know, keep reminding yourself, yes, I have asked forgiveness in this matter and I it is a done matter. All right. So number seven, it is to make forgiveness a lifestyle. Go to page number 17 where it goes on to
00 say forgiven much loves much. It is the principle of the unforgiving servant that he failed to grasp grasp and the key to understand the entire economy of grace in the kingdom of God. So all right here again Lord Jesus speaks about two parables and another parable where he goes on to say that he there was a man who had a depth and another man he had a lesser depth. And then he makes this question he asks this question to a man named Simon by saying who do you think will love the master more? So this man said that the person who had you know more depths will love the master. So then Lord Jesus here he goes on to say person people who have more sins in their life you know what they would love you know God more. Okay. So there was an incident that happened in Luke chapter 7 where there was the sinful woman who came to Lord Jesus and Lord Jesus was talking based on that. All right go to the uh next page page number 18.
05 So the parable of the two doctors here it is a diagnostic tool. All right. How can I tell if someone has truly been forgiven? The answer is look for their love. So this woman's love was genuine. He she genuinely expressed her love for God. Number two, the parable of the unforgiving servant is a warning and a command. Why I must forgive others? And the answer is because you have been forgiven. All right. So the in page number 19 there is a a comparing of two similar parables which probably you can go home and read. So let's look into the conclusion. The parable of the uns unforgiving servant presents us with a stark and and unavoidable choice. God's kingdom operates on an economy of limitless grace, cancelling debts too fast for us to ever repay. In other words, you know, when we receive two true grace from God, we are supposed to show that divine grace to others. You know in when we look at our own lives
