2 Timothy 1:7
“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
According to an AI (Artificial Intelligence) overview, “people’s fears are diverse, ranging from specific phobias like heights, spiders, and snakes to broader anxieties like health, the future, rejection, the unknown and death.”
Fear does not come from God. Instead, it is a strategy of the enemy to stop us, especially from spreading the Word and standing up for what is right in God’s sight. Fear can generate timidity and cowardice. It does not represent power, strength, or boldness.
In today’s verse, Paul reminds Timothy — who was probably very gentle and timid — not to give in to fear. We can overcome fear through the power and strength that come from God alone, which generates courage within us. God reminds us to be “strong and courageous” (Joshua 1:9). We need His power to help us overcome trials, insults, and dangers.
Another way to overcome fear is through love — the love of God that bears all, enables us to love even those whom we think are not worthy and forgives those who hurt us. This love, which we got through grace, can be extended to our enemies.
Yet another way to overcome fear is by having a sound mind, or self-control and self-discipline. The Bible says that we have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). A sound mind is prudent, sober and well-balanced; it is moderate and composed.
When we bind these three together: the power of God, the love of God, and a sound mind from Christ, fear has no chance and must flee. So, ensure you stay connected to the One who can help you overcome all fear.
