Matthew 5:14-15 NIV
You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
Light is a powerful symbol of purity and divine revelation throughout Scripture, representing truth, holiness, and the very presence of God. As Christians, we are not only called to slow the decay of the world like salt, but also to shine as beacons of hope, illuminating the path for others.
When we walk closely with Jesus—the Light of the world—we become light-bearers, reflecting His character in our lives. Even the smallest light can drive away darkness, a reminder that our influence matters. Ultimately, the purpose of letting our light shine is not for self-recognition but so that God may be glorified through our words, actions, and example.
When Jesus said, ‘Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl,’ He was teaching that light is meant to shine, not be hidden. Our lives should illuminate the path for others, pointing them toward God’s glory. Psalm 119:105 reminds us that God’s Word guides our steps, just as light reveals the way forward. May we rely on God’s Word to light our path, so we can live as hope bearers in the world.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Light of the world. Help me walk in Your light daily and reflect Your love and truth in everything I do. Let my life shine brightly—not for my glory, but so others may see You and glorify Your name. Teach me to trust Your Word as the lamp that guides my steps. In Your name, Amen.
