Jeremiah 17:7

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord.

Let’s go back in time to the final years of Judah as a nation. While their neighbor, Israel, had already been exiled, Judah lingered on. Into this fray, God commissions Jeremiah to convey His indictment against Judah. Jeremiah prophesies God’s words, yet Judah ignores his cries for repentance. Instead, they choose to trust the gods of other nations and follow them into God’s judgement and destruction.

Biblically, blessings are a sign of God’s favor upon those who trust Him. Trusting in the Lord implies having faith in God’s sovereignty and His promises. It does not depend on human limitations but on the unchanging nature of God.

In today’s verse, Jeremiah calls those who trust and hope in the Lord blessed. Such a person is like a tree planted by water (Jeremiah 17:8), thriving even in the harshest heat and drought and bearing fruit throughout. However, those who rely on human strength are like a barren shrub in the desert; cursed and unfruitful (Jeremiah 17:5–6).

Like an anchor holds a ship steady in rough seas, trusting in the Lord secures our lives. It involves committing our hearts, needs, and future to Him for provision and protection, both now and for eternity.

Perhaps you are facing attacks from the adversary, challenging days, or trauma right now. Invite Jesus to be the anchor of your ship. Trust Him; He plans to build you up and give you hope, not harm you (Jeremiah 29:11). Just as the tree remains strong and green through difficulties, you will endure and persevere with divine peace and resilience. Like its fruit, you will nourish others despite adversities, thus glorifying your Creator.
