Matthew 28:20
“I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28 is renowned for the Great Commission that Jesus assigns His 11 disciples on the Mount of Galilee (Matthew 28:16-20). He instructs them to disciple people of all nations, baptize them, and teach them to follow God’s commands. Matthew ends the chapter with Jesus’ promise to be with His disciples until the end of the age.
What did it mean to the disciples then? Jesus had entrusted them with a challenging mission, and He fully understood its weight. Through His promise, He reassured them that they would not face these difficult spiritual tasks alone. His presence was not limited by time or space—it would always accompany them, enduring until the end of the age.
What does this mean for believers today? The promise, “I am with you always,” has been described as “the believer’s pillow,” offering rest to the weary soul, companionship in loneliness, and strength for the mission to which we are called. It assures us of lasting security, no matter what each day brings. As children of God, we inherit this promise—we are never alone in the race set before us.
This promise is available to us, but to truly experience it, we must learn to abide in it. Meditatively recall Jesus’ words—“I am with you always”, daily. This practice shifts us from self-reliance to dependence on God. In everyday challenges, a simple, silent prayer—“Holy Spirit, help me”—acknowledges His presence and invites His guidance. Staying connected to community and church fellowship also provides a tangible way to experience His presence (Matthew 18:20).
Let us, therefore, remain consciously aware of His presence, trusting that He is faithful to keep His promise.
