1 John 5:4

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

Jesus gave us a realistic but hopeful promise: “In this world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). By dying on the cross and rising on the third day, Jesus definitively defeated death and conquered the world. But this leaves us with an important question: how do we, as ordinary human beings, overcome the world too?

The answer lies in 1 John 5:4: “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”

To overcome the world, we must place our complete trust in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. True faith requires a secure object; it cannot just be a vague feeling. Many people say they have faith, yet they do not know what they actually believe in. Scripture is clear that faith in Christ alone gives us the power to conquer the world.

Trying to face the darkness of this world on our own is nearly impossible. But with God, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). Faith is the essential tool that empowers us to obey God’s commandments, run away from evil, and remain holy in an unholy environment.

Our ultimate victory is already won through Jesus. When we anchor our faith firmly in Him, we no longer have to live in fear of the world around us. Instead, we can walk forward with confidence, knowing that the One living inside us has already conquered it all.
