Psalm 1:1
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.
This psalm describes the man who is blessed. Blessing comes to anyone who refuses to be influenced by the ungodly. They don’t keep company with a bad crowd or align with those who choose to do wrong. Further, they refuse to join those who mock God, mock the righteous, and oppose whatever is virtuous.
Today’s verse mentions a gradual shift: first walking, then standing, and finally sitting. This is how influence works. It begins subtly as we listen to voices that pull us away from God’s truth. It then gets stronger when we adopt habits and choices that align with those voices. Eventually, we settle into a posture of belonging among those who mock what’s holy.
We need to be alert to this gradual drift and choose a better way of living. The voices we follow determine the direction of our lives. Choosing counsel rooted in integrity, goodness, and truth leads to stability and peace. This scripture invites every person – whether believer or seeker – to consider which influences bring life and which quietly drain it.
May today’s word encourage us to examine our steps, our stance, and our seat. Blessedness is not found in perfection but in choosing God’s way over the world’s patterns. The path of life begins with one simple decision: to walk where God leads. So, as Paul says in Ephesians 5:7-8, let’s not partner with the disobedient but walk as children of light.
Prayer: Lord, guide my steps and guard my heart. Help me choose influences that draw me closer to You and shape me in Your truth. Amen.
