“In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
Psalm 56:11
In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
Among the many emotions we face as humans, fear is one that stands against our faith in God. We feel fearful, not only because of external circumstances, but also because our own minds struggle to believe what God can do. Several verses in the Bible directly tell us not to fear. They remind us that God is sovereign and on the throne.
In Psalm 56, David groans to God about his enemies who oppress him and fight against him all day long, waiting to swallow him up. But he later proclaims that he will trust God even in times of fear. When he trusts God’s ability to take care of him, fear of man does not control him.
As we navigate complex situations in life, fear of unforeseen calamities can consume us and shake our faith. When people close to us turn against us and become our foes, we feel fearful and helpless to move ahead. While it is completely valid to feel fearful, we must also remember the power of trusting God in any situation.
While people around us may have some power to harm or destroy us, God’s protection can shield us from the worst of calamities and break every scheme the enemy plots against us. Like David, we must remember the authority of our God, and use His Word as a shield and sword in times of fear.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your goodness in my life during this season. Despite my struggles and difficulties, You have never abandoned me. When fearful thoughts control me, may Your Holy Spirit strengthen me. Lead me and guide me in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
