Ephesians 2:13 – “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”
We can say a lot about the relationship we have with a person based on how we approach them. A CEO’s assistant might have to knock and wait at the CEO’s door before being admitted. But the CEO’s son can run to him if he’s scared or needs a drink of water, even if it’s in the middle of the night. Our closest relationships are with people we can talk to any time of day or night without hesitation.
In the Old Testament, God was greatly feared and revered. Nobody could approach Him as they pleased, and even a high priest could enter His presence only once a year with a sacrifice. God Almighty is holy and we humans, with all our mess-ups and mistakes, cannot stand in His presence as we are. But all that changed when the Lord Jesus Christ bore our sins on the cross and sacrificed His life, tearing the partition between God and man once and for all (Hebrews 10:19-20).
Now, we can boldly approach the throne of God, any time of day or night. We can go to Him confidently as a beloved son or daughter, knowing our Father will embrace us when we reach up to Him. It doesn’t matter what time it is – whether late at night when sleep is elusive, or at a stressful midday work meeting. It only takes a second to turn our minds to God and seek Him. The question is, how often do we do it?
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the gift of being able to approach You any time of day or night. May I always be aware of Your presence as I go about my day. I know I’ll find everything I need in You today. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
