Are You Salty?

Matthew 5:13 NIV

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

Have you ever come across a situation where you needed to add a little salt to your food because it was bland? The truth is, you cannot find a kitchen without salt. It is a substance everyone needs!

In biblical times, sacrifices and covenant binding had salt as a component (Leviticus 2:13). Therefore, it is very significant that Jesus called us the salt of the earth. He did not say, “You become the salt”. Instead, He said, “You ARE the salt”. When we become a new creation in Christ, the potential to be the salt is already in us.

Just as salt brings out the best flavour in food, we too can enhance the quality of our environment. Just as salt preserves food, we too can counter the moral decay in our society. We can influence others to avoid spoiling their lives through sin and disobedience.

When we interact with others, we can make our conversations seasoned with salt by being gracious in how we speak (Colossians 4:6). No matter how sensible our message is, we lose its effectiveness if our words are not “tasty” or respectful. Let us be kind and compassionate to them. The motto is: Win the heart, not the argument!

Jesus has a warning too. We can lose our saltiness when we blend into and become like the world. When we avoid the cost of standing up for Christ, we become worthless for His kingdom.

Pause and think: Are you a salty person? If yes, praise God! Continue to be so. Or have you lost your saltiness? If yes, repent and get right with God. He is a God of many chances!
