1 Peter 4:10
As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
David was more than just a shepherd boy. He faithfully tended sheep, but he also developed skills that God used for His glory:
- David was a skilled stone thrower.
He practiced with precision, and this seemingly simple ability led him to defeat Goliath. Later, others trained by David used the same skill to defeat giants who threatened Israel (2 Samuel 21:18–22). - David was also musically gifted.
He played the harp so skillfully that King Saul called on him to play whenever he was tormented by an evil spirit. David’s music brought peace and relief, showing how his gift ministered to others (1 Samuel 16:23).
These examples remind us of three key principles when it comes to using our own gifts:
- Discover Your Gifts
We must recognise the natural and spiritual gifts God has placed in us. Without awareness, we cannot be effective stewards. - Develop Your Gifts
Talents and spiritual gifts do not grow on their own. Whether it’s writing, singing, playing an instrument, teaching, or speaking in tongues, we need to exercise and grow in these areas through prayer, practice, and dedication. - Use Your Gifts to Serve Others
Our gifts are meant to build others up, strengthen the church, and glorify God. Serving with our gifts is part of our calling as followers of Christ.
Like David, let us be faithful stewards of the grace God has given us. As we serve others with our gifts, He will bless us in His perfect time.
