Luke 6:36

Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

Mercy is one of the many attributes of God that we are called to imitate. Jesus taught His disciples to love their enemies and concluded His teaching with this command: “Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.” Mercy means having sincere concern for others, especially when they are suffering, weak, or disadvantaged.

God has shown us the greatest example of mercy. Though we were separated from Him by sin, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us. Ephesians 4:32 reminds us, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Since we have received such undeserved mercy, we are called to extend it to others.

Being merciful means choosing compassion instead of judgment, offering forgiveness when we have been hurt, and extending a helping hand to those who are struggling. Mercy does not mean approving wrong actions or ignoring justice.

Imagine a child who accidentally breaks a valuable vase. Frightened, the child expects punishment. Instead, the father sees the child’s tears, forgives him, and lovingly teaches him to be more careful. He does not excuse the mistake, but he responds with compassion. This is a simple picture of mercy.

Today, let us ask God for merciful hearts. When someone disappoints us, let us remember the mercy we have received from our heavenly Father. May our words, actions, and responses reflect His compassion and grace toward those around us.

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your great mercy. Help me show mercy to others as You have shown mercy to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
