John 12:49-50 NIV
“I did not speak on My own, but the Father who sent Me commanded Me to say all that I have spoken. I know that His command leads to eternal life.”
We all follow someone—whether it’s a celebrity, a world leader, or even a manager at work. We often look to those who appear successful, trying to mirror their behavior, speech, or lifestyle. However, the best person to follow is Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul says, “Follow me as I follow Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). In today’s verse, Jesus tells His disciples that His words are not His own but governed by the commands of the Father in Heaven. He was simply following God’s will.
Jesus had a mission on earth given by the Father, and He faithfully lived it out. He understood that God’s commands are for our good and they lead to eternal life (John 12:50). So, the question is: Whose commands are we following? While it is important to respect earthly authorities, it is far more crucial to follow God’s commandments. Besides, it’s clearly outlined in the Bible. The book of Joshua reminds us to carefully follow God’s commands for success in life (Joshua 1:8).
Jesus’ life serves as our ultimate example, and we should aim to emulate Him as the leader of our lives. God calls us to live in a way that pleases Him, which means doing what He wants us to do. It’s about saying no to our own desires and saying yes to Jesus. Let’s commit to living a life that pleases God and fulfills His commands.
