Matthew 5:8
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
In our desire to experience God, we often try to reach Him through our own righteousness. We cling to traditions, follow rules, and rely on human counsel, hoping these will draw us closer to God. But in doing so, we begin to trust in our works, justifying ourselves, and drifting far from the very God we seek.
The story of Zacchaeus shows us another way (Luke 19:1–10).
Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector, was overlooked by the religious elite. Yet he longed to see Jesus and did whatever he could to catch a glimpse of Him, even from a distance. However, Jesus saw Zacchaeus’ heart beyond his efforts and reputation, and chose to stay at his house. Zacchaeus welcomed Him with joy. That encounter with Christ transformed him, restoring what sin had broken and guilt had stolen.
Like Zacchaeus, our pursuit of God begins with the heart. While we make intentional efforts to seek Him, true transformation comes when we sincerely repent and joyfully receive Jesus in our lives. He is able to purify our hearts from the stains of sin.
It is easy to slip back into relying on our works, but God is after our hearts. The Holy Spirit is our Helper, cleansing our hearts each day, guiding our lives to reflect God’s holiness. He shapes us, convicts us, and strengthens us in our pursuit of seeing God.
From the beginning, God desired to walk with His people, as He walked with Adam and Eve. However, a Holy God can only fellowship with a pure heart. So today, lean on the Holy Spirit to purify your heart. He will remove what does not belong and make room for God’s presence in your life.
