2 Samuel 22:51 – “He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed.”
If there was one person in the Old Testament who truly understood the mercy of God, it was King David. The ruddy shepherd boy with no proper qualification was anointed king. He slew a giant and won many battles, but also ran away to the enemy camp when he was hunted by Saul. He gave in to his lustful desires, became an adulterer and a murderer. And yet, despite his many failings, God considered him a man after His own heart.
Every time David fell away from God, he repented with all his heart. He never wanted God’s presence to depart from Him. He appealed to God’s mercy and forgiveness time and again, and God obliged. While we may not commit the same crimes as David, we do struggle with secret sins. But because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, we too can appeal to God’s mercy. The blood of Jesus washes away our sins and clothes us with righteousness.
